Pte H Marshall

 

Herbert Marshall was born at Brimpton in 1882, the son of Thomas Marshall who came to live in North Street next to the Thatcher’s Arms as a carpenter on the Englefield Estate. Herbert followed in his father’s trade and after the death of his father continued to live at North Street with his wife Florence and daughter Phyllis.

 

He enlisted at Pangbourne, initially in the Royal Engineers but at the time of his death was serving with the 22nd (Tyneside Scottish) battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers.

 

Herbert Marshall was initially posted as missing but subsequently listed as killed in action on 5 June 1917. Having no known grave he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
