Englefield History

Cpl G Slyfield

The Reading Standard pictured George Slyfield of the Army Service Corps and gave his address as Englefield though it is not certain how he came to be associated with the village. He was born in 1883 at Winnersh and in 1911 was a groom lodging at Bowden Green near Pangbourne. It is possible that he obtained a new post at Englefield between then and 1914 but he is not mentioned in the parish magazine. He married Florence Emma Taylor from Hurst on 9 April 1912.

He died of pneumonia in France on 22 October 1918, presumably another victim of the influenza outbreak, and his next of kin was stated as Florence Emma Slyfield then living at Priors Court Cottage, Chieveley.
