Appleton's Corner

Appleton’s Corner is the area where the end of The Street meets the drive from the Lodge Gates up to Englefield House and forms a cross roads with the track leading into the Park. In the early 19th century George Appleton, a retired farmer, had a house here, on the grass in about the centre of the picture below. George Appleton was born at Kingsclere in 1775 and probably farmed at Sulhamstead before retiring to Englefield. He died in 1864 at Reading and is buried at St Michael's, Sulhamstead.
